Lana is 7

Lana Mae is 7! She has to be the most patient one for her big day it seems like, because starting in December we have a steady stream of birthday and hers ends that streak until (almost) winter.

Lana is ALL IN into whatever she's doing. She played her first year of basketball this year and loved it. She started to realize her own strength and speed and gained a lot of confidence over the season. She also finished up softball this summer and really enjoyed that. Lana also plays piano and although practicing isn't her favorite, she has really improved a lot in the last year and is really good at site reading when she trusts herself. She struggles with being a bit of a perfectionist, but has really learned in the last couple months that it's okay to try and not be the best right away. We also learned this summer that Lana is an excellent swimmer. Her swimming lesson teacher said her strokes are text book. She likes having that distinction from her siblings. :)

Lana is gearing up for second grade. She finished her first grade academically strong. The other aspects of school were a struggle this year with differing little dramas, but I think we've had enough school detox that she's excited to give it another go. I'm confident she will have a good year. In JAM last year she learned she is good at memorizing Bible verses. She also is really good at remembering to pray for people we know that need prayer. Lana is incredibly observant and has an excellent memory which is sometimes very helpful, and sometimes very challenging because her mom doesn't always remember what I was supposed to be doing. :)

Lana enjoys playing Barbies, house, and cheer leading (especially with her cousin Remy). She likes to play outside with someone (not alone) and likes to jump on the trampoline and ride her bike. As she grows up, it's fun to see her become more accomodating for her younger siblings and just realizing how to get them to play with her. She's good with them.

We look forward to seeing what 2nd grade has for Lana and what she has for it! She is such a little spunky light and we love her to pieces. <3

Knox is 5

Sara McMillian Photography- I mean, come on! <3

Whew what a ride! Knox is FIVE!

Knox is a ball of curios energy and confident "I can do this without asking" energy. I feel like he is always in a process of creating something or devising a scheme. I don't how to further describe that, but if you know him I think you know exactly what I'm talking about.

He is also incredibly sweet. He notices things about his family and comments them as if they're no big deal. Awhile back I was wearing a dress he hadn't seen and he said "you're so beautiful" with no schmooze to it at all. He said it like a statement and it was so kind. Also, at church whenever I am playing piano, he delivers me little notes on the half wall in front of the piano. He sometimes delivers them in a hymnal.

Knox is currently gearing up for Kindergarten and we are all so excited for him. I think he is excited also, but he's very stoic about it, maybe even a little nervous. We enjoyed this last year of being at home. He enjoyed the power of turning on PBS kids whenever the kids went to school and he really was sweet to Greta. I've said it before and I'll say it until I'm gone, I love this year of friendship 2-3 year old with older sibling 4-5. I love it so much that I get a photo session of it. Thanks to our friend Sara who has captured each of my kids at this stage.

Knox absolutely is the life of the party or he's really quiet. Both/either are cause for some follow up, but we are absolutely confident that God made him just right for His purpose and we can't wait to see how Kindergarten plays a role in getting him there. His teacher is the best and speaks "Wichert" very proficiently as this will be Wichert #5 for her.

Here are a few quotes from Knox from the last year.

  • (Hating getting his haircut) "If you keep cutting my hair, I'm going to look like an old grandpa with no hair.
  • (At Pizza Ranch eating his dessert and out of the blue) "6 is next to 7!"
  • (Driving by the hospital in Salina) Mom" Greta and Knox, that is where you were born. That's where you were brand new babies!" Knox "Is it called brand new baby place?"
  • At Walmart trying to move around a lady's cart in the middle of the isle. I said "excuse us" and Knox said "excuse her too!"
  • (At the dentist after she sucked out the water with the straw.) "I like the pipe!"
  • (Driving to Hutch in icy conditions) "Stay calm and steady."
  • "Eli, I got a job for you. You need to find Luna's collar."
  • (Leaving club car wash after Brent locked himself out of the truck and after a long day.) Mom "It feels like everyone is thinking- mom is really on edge maybe we can do something to really make her lose it!" Knox "Let's go to a hot dog stand!!!"
  • At the Garcia's house, Knox licked Rory while on the trampoline and then said "If you can't beat 'em, lick 'em!"
  • We lost Knox after JAM one night. After Brent found him he said he thought Eli and Micah could see his trail. "oh wait (slaps hand to head), my trail is invisible."
  • "Mom, how is your leg?" Mom "it's doing ok, thanks for asking" Knox "My pleasure."
  • (big sigh) "It's a great day for bird watching."
  • Knox walks into my room and sees a pile of clothes and shoes to donate. "Mom, when I get big, my girlfriend might want those."
  • Riding in the car out of the blue "I didn't know dad was alive in the 1980's!"

Micah is 11

Micah loves to chat and discuss and ask questions. He's probably our most social kid, at least at this point, and he loves talking to anyone. He reminds us both of his Grandpa Gary in this way. He wants to know about you and he's happy to share about himself also. He's also really funny and his most funny target is his dad.

Micah wrapped up his grade school career in May. It's crazy to think he'll be headed to middle school. In our town, he goes from 40ish in his grade to 150ish in his grade. Given what I've already shared about him, I think he'll deal with the increase just fine. Paying attention and not talking too much are Micah's biggest school challenges. :) He's excited to join his brother and they even get to have a class together.

Micah played soccer, basketball and baseball this past school year. He found some success in each with his favorite being basketball. He will soon venture out to tackle football and he's really excited about that and as of today, he's earned $100 he needed to come up with himself.

He and Eli still love to collect sports cards- their most favorite ones being NFL. The last few weeks he's been drawing football and basketball players. He really enjoys art. Oh, and he redesigns his shoe boxes of Curry shoes. They look pretty sweet.

Micah has become more of a reader in the last 6 months or so and finished Harry Potter this summer. He's working on a book about the Mannings right now. He also plays piano and does a really good job. Practicing isn't his favorite part of the day, but he's the most consistent in practicing. He generally comes home from school and practices piano first thing.

Greta is 3

Sara McMillian Photography

Baby girl is 3! And she's "not a baby". She is independent and very very funny. She makes us laugh every day. She's pretty independent, but when we're in public she is a little more reserved. Whenever people are around she usually runs up to Brent or I and says something like "you're the best mama/dada ever". It always gets a sweet reaction, and although i knew she loves us, I do think it's a phrase she has in her back pocket when she doesn't know what else to say. Grandma Bonnie said it best awhile ago, "she's sweet, but she's a bit of a schmooze".

Greta still takes a nap- though she is close to not needing one. She and Knox still share a room and it's the sweetest thing. They definitely look out for each other at night. She moms him something fierce and he lets her. We'll get in the car and she'll say "Knox, you need to get buckled" and he doesn't get mad at her. It's the best.

I think she most likes to play with her siblings- usually pretending to play house or some similar game is the one she likes the most. She does like to play Barbies, but usually doesn't want to play exactly like the big girls do. She is happy to be treated like the baby and usually wants her way. She especially loud and verbal, which explains why she's so funny sometimes.

Here are some quotes from Greta from the last year.

  • "Micah Scott you stop. You're being a jerk" Mom- Greta we don't talk like that. Don't call your brother that. "Oh, only your sisters?"
  • Me pretending to put on Greta's jammies... "it doesn't fit you, but you can get a huge one for your birthday"
  • At a stop light in Hutch... "gracious! That's a lot of trucks!"
  • "My tummy has a headache."
  • While reading the Elisha story of the lady who doesn't run out of oil. The first question at the end was 'why was the lady sad at the beginning of the story' to which Greta said "because she just got dunked on".
  • At the pool one day, Greta told me she needed to go to the bathroom. We went into the building and I sat her on the potty and she started going and then said "seeeeeee, I told ya".
  • Greta went out the garage door to play outside for a little. Brent was in the kitchen when she wanted to come back in. Brent didn't come right away and when he did, she yelled at him "Dad, I'm a little KID!"
We love Greta Jo and love seeing what she continues to become as she grows. What a treat to be right there for the milestones.

Haddie is 9

Wow, time is really flying. Haddie continues to be a sweetie pie. She loves school (even though she says she doesn't) and is also quite a little home body. Haddie just finished her third grade year with the best third grade teacher and she had an excellent year. She goes to a lot of ball games because of her big brothers and in the last year or so has really gotten into them. She doesn't really bring things to do, because she watches the games and yells and cheers. She loves watching football on TV and played basketball this year (I coached her team). She also enjoyed her summer of softball. She doesn't like being hot or sweaty outside. I think the liked softball because June was unseasonably cool. :)

Haddie is a mama. She takes care of the little kids with such ease. If someone is upset while playing, I'll overhear her talking them through and she sounds a lot like me. She has a natural nurturing about her and is mature. She doesn't get involved in girl drama at school as she'd rather be by herself than be a part of that. Everyone loves Haddie and she loves everyone. She has a small pool of friends she does things with because I wonder if she is more introverted than not. I don't know, time will tell.

Haddie likes to organize and watches home makeover shows. The one she and Lana really like is called Castle Impossible. She also likes Fixer Upper and Hometown. Recently Grandma let her borrow discs of Down Gilead Lane and she has devoured that. She also enjoys reading (I Survived, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and graphic novels) and playing Barbies with Lana.

Card collecting has also become one of Haddie's hobbies. She has a lot of Patrick Mahomes cards and knows a good bargain. If any of the boy's friends think they can pull a fast one on her, they are mistaken. Girlfriend knows her stuff. She also has been playing piano for a year and a half and it comes really easily to her. She has a great voice also, and I always love to hear her sing.

We're gearing up for the next school year and I can't believe Haddie will be our biggest kid at BGS. She will do well with that as she's always watching out for her siblings- including her big ones. She also went to her first year of kid's camp and got to have her cousin Shelby as her counselor. That was a God-send and she had the best time.

We love her so much and can't wait to see her grow this coming school year!

Eli is 13

Our first teenager. And by the time I'm writing this he's already passed the half point and is rounding the corner to 14. Crazy!

Eli is a great kid. His middle school has 3 words they put on everything: respectful, responsible, kind- and he is these three things. He doesn't love school, but he doesn't rebel and for that I'm really grateful.

He loves sports (probably why he tolerates school) and participated in football, basketball and track this past year. In track, his most consistent event was the 1600. Hopefully he'll get a few more reps at discus next year too as he seemed to enjoy that one. In football he mainly played JV as a running back and linebacker. In the last game of the season, he got one rep at running back in the varsity game and had a 12 yard carry. Basketball quickly became a favorite and he was a great defender and mainly played the 3 or 4 position. There was one play in particular that I will hopefully always remember- we had scored and he picked off the in-bounds and went in for a reverse layup and made it. I stood up and what came over me was well, loud and proud. Track season was super fun for him and I think he enjoyed the social aspect of meeting new people. One of his closer friends by the end of the season was a kid he had never seen prior to the season starting.

His favorite hobby is cards. More specifically sports cards- mainly the NFL and NBA. If he's not buying them, he's watching videos about them, getting together with friends to trade them, or dreaming about the next money he will get in order to buy more cards. His brain is a steel trap, so he can tell you rookie years and cards and all sorts of things. He and Micah both enjoy this together. As far as hobbies go, I think there are worse ones. He also continues to be an avid reader. If you have book suggestions, send them our way!

We stopped farming this last year, so he's not bucking bales this summer but he is still really helpful. He's willing to put in hard work and doesn't mind sweating through it. He babysits for me, mows our lawn and mows for his grandma. He and Micah went into town this spring after a wind storm and stacked branches for folks- I think he felt really good after that.

As is typical of a lot of first-borns, Eli would prefer to sit with the adults and soak in all the stories they're telling. He's really enjoyable, so he gets away with it sometimes. We've had several folks from our church that have sought us out to tell us how much they enjoy visiting with him. He really enjoys talking to and listening to people who are older than him. I think that's a great quality.

We love him and love getting a clearer picture, as he grows, who God has made him to be. We're praying for a good growing year for him (and he hopes that's literal growing too). :)

Lana is 6

Oh this girl has grown up so much! She has just finished up kindergarten and will be entering first grade in a few short weeks. I can't believe a whole school year has come and gone. She definitely has grown in some confidence and in skills. She has a variety of friends and cares a lot about them. She even started splitting her two recesses in the day between her athletic friends and her friends that liked to play pretend. I went on her zoo field trip and it was fun to see her hang with some of the boys in her class and run and play rough with them. It also made me realize how much she accommodates/regulates during the school day and why she seems so tired when she gets home. :)

Lana still very much wants to be a part of whatever is going on. It has been fun to be around when she has discovered that she doesn't hate alone time. She sat on the deck a few weeks back and when she came in she declared that she liked it so much. She is the leader of the crew when she plays with Knox and Greta and the follower when she's with the big kids. She and Haddie have a bunk bed now, so that's been a huge hit and they take turns being on the top bunk.

Lana loves creating anything- she is a really talented artist. She also loves reading and did the sweetest thing- she started reading Little House in the Big Woods, and although i don't think she is reading every word, she does have a book mark to keep her place. She's also very strong and is proud of being a strong and fast girl. She played soccer this spring and t-ball this summer. She also has enjoyed swimming this summer. She's just growing up! She loves playing Barbies and Lego especially with a sibling. Lana also started piano this year and still loves dancing, just not in dance class this year.

Love you so much, Lana Mae!

Knox is 4

What a kid! Knox is 4, and has been for nearly 3 months so high time for documenting his little personality as best I can.

Knox shares a room with his little sister now. He's so sweet with her at night and if he gets out of bed and I tell him "Greta needs you", that's usually enough to get him back to his room. He is sweet with her- until he isn't- but really he takes care of her.

Knox is often in his own little world having his own little conversations. I love watching him when he is doing this. Brent and I usually look at each other like- don't you wonder what's going on in there? He sings a lot and remembers his Bible verses from church really well. He seems to pick up on things very quickly. And when you think he isn't listening, he definitely is.

It's been no secret that Knox walks to the beat of his own drum. We have been extremely humbled in our parenting with him. Our job is still the same, but our methods have shifted and changed and our pride really has no part in it. That's God's grace, no doubt, but it isn't always fun to fall flat on your face. But the successes are extra sweet with this one. Also, he is incredibly sweet- he compliments and cheers for everyone. It really is something as Knox grows in his communication skills how God really made him to see things Brent and I aren't wired to see- like in a beautiful and slowed down way.

Knox loves the color red, and blue and purple, and gold, and...you get the picture. He likes to go to the wellness center with Mom. He likes to play Lego, Barbies, trading cards, hot wheels, puzzles, read books, ride his scooter and just be where everyone else is. He has a few chores he helps with and it has been fun to watch him grow in his independence. Just today, he was to pick up his room- I usually have him get started on his own and then see where he needs some guidance or help. Today, I walked in to him making his bed- what a nice surprise.

He loves to pray and sometimes will just start praying once we've sat down to eat- he thanks God for our house and church and Mabel almost every time he prays. Mabel is his second cousin and just adores her. We're pretty confident he's a lefty- he still sometimes uses his right hand to write. We made him use a left handed glove when he played t-ball this summer. T-ball, did he play? Well not exactly- but he did keep his jersey/shirt on and the last game he played the whole time. I think we may forget to sign up next year, but may try the following year with Greta.

We only have one more year at home before Knox goes to kindergarten. I anticipate that day to be a tough one for me. I tell people Knox and I have been to war together, so every step forward is because of a battle won and a step forward into enemy territory. I say it with a smile and laugh, but there's some truth to it too. I am confident Knox will be a world changer- no doubt in my mind- i just can't wait to see what God has for him.

Micah is 10

Well it's 3 months after Micah's birthday so high time I write this. :)

Micah wrapped up his 4th grade year and ended it well. He played soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball this summer. He really loves sports and has deepened his love for the Cowboys and trading cards this year. Micah continues to be creative and this Halloween he made his own costume- he was an Emmit Smith rookie card! It was quite a project and he proudly wore it to school. He's a whiz at math and really loves the social aspect of school. He also started guitar and piano lessons this summer and had a solo in his spring concert this year.

Micah is a helper and likes to see things that need attention and do them on his own. He would much rather do that than be given a job. He's a good helper that way too, but it gives him a lot of joy to do things on his own. He has helped with hay this summer- he's on the verge of being able to buck a bale, but not quite. He can get a couple and can team lift with Eli. But he's also found he can encourage and fill water bottles when we unload the bales in the barn. It's been fun watching him figure out his role.

I've said it before, but Micah is good at noticing people and understanding or trying to understand them. We really love watching this develop as he grows older- God made him this way and we love seeing it in action. This last year we went to a Rend Collective concert and as they typically do they promoted a ministry- Compassion- and talked about this group of kids who needed sponsors. They asked if you wanted to sponsor a kid and Micah's had shot right up. If his face could have spoke what he was feeling, I think it would have sounded like "why wouldn't we?" So a little girl named Jaralee chose Micah as her sponsor and we get to pray for her and be a small part of her life. It's been very sweet and a good depiction of Micah's heart for people.

Micah's alopecia areata has cleared up fully. We are thankful for that. Because it is an autoimmune disease, it could make another appearance in Micah's future. We are thankful for the lessons it taught us and are thankful for a reprieve from its affects.

For his 10th birthday, he, Eli and Dad went to an OKC Thunder game.

Micah Scott, we love you so much. We can't believe you're going into your last year of elementary school! Keep walking with Jesus- you can trust Him.

Aunt Sue

taken at my Senior prom 2005

Most people knew her as Sue Ann, but she was Aunt Sue to me and that always meant something special. She was my dad's oldest sister and I joked that he was her first baby. I think she always loved to baby him, but she also respected him a ton. She loved him and was one of his biggest fans. So that's the simple background, and then he (her baby brother) had four boys and me.

Because Aunt Sue started her family quite young and there were some years between she and my dad, her grand kids are all around my age. And yet I never felt like she was too busy for me. As an adult myself, I often think about how much more fun I was as an aunt before I had my own kids and how I often don't get to spend as much time/energy on my nieces and nephews as I'd like to. But I never felt that way with her. It's also important to me to state that I know she had an incredible love for her grand kids (and great grand kids)- she loved them so much and had such a strong bond with them. Mine wasn't that, but it was a beautiful aunt/niece one and I lacked nothing there.

I was able to share some of my favorite memories with her last year for her 80th birthday, but I will type some here for my own memory and for posterity sake. When she and Uncle Raymond lived in Wetmore, they hosted Wertenberger Christmas. If my memory serves me, they lived in an old rest home that was converted into a house. I'd like to drive by as an adult because in my mind's eye it's the longest house ever. And the food line was just as long as the house- well, maybe not quite but there was SO MUCH food. It was always a highlight of the Christmas season and I remember feeling like the drive home was so long. There was always lots of love, food, and laughter.

The other holiday I especially remember was Memorial Day. It was really important to my Grandma to have flowers on the graves of my Grandpa and my Aunt Vonda Lee. After the service in Sabetha we would look at the flags to see if my grandpa's flag was up. Then would start the arguing (in my family of kids) about who would get to go with Grandma and Aunt Sue to the other cemeteries in Circleville and Bala (I think). It was on one of these trips that I remember Grandma, Aunt Sue and I got so tickled about something that we absolutely could not stop laughing. You know the kind of laughter that catches you during church when you're around 10 years old? It was that kind. Once we got calmed down and were resolved to move on, one of us would get to laughing and it would rev up again.

I also remember around this same age Aunt Sue gave me a diary and a purse for my birthday. The small purse didn't have sequence and bright colors, but was a dark blue leather. I felt so sophisticated and like she saw me as the real grown up that I was. :)

In high school, I got to see her everyday. She was the accountant at the school and punched lunch cards. She would buy me something off of a-la-cart on my birthday. She kept her eye out for me and that wasn't an easy season for her as it is when my Uncle Raymond passed away. She always seemed to have a strength that didn't make sense.

Even into adulthood she would send me a birthday card or call me on the phone to chat about something. It wasn't scheduled nor would I call it frequent, but it was always good. To my knowledge, we always ended with "I love you". During covid shutdown, we started writing letters to each other. She would send us a card full of balloons for the kids to blow up and play with. Or sometimes sticks of gum for each of them. It was so much fun and I haven't had the heart capacity to get the letters out, but one of these days I will get them out and have a good cry and probably a hearty laugh. One year a few years back she wrote that she had read through the whole Bible and didn't know if she'd gotten much out of it or not. I think she did, but I told her about a different version of the Bible that I liked and my dad told me later that she had gotten it. That meant a lot to me, that my opinion mattered to her.

A few weeks before she passed away, I got to visit her at the hospital. I've never been around someone who was at peace with dying like she was. It was really beautiful. But I got to tell her that she was the best cheerleader- she was just always impressed by what I did and told me so. That I was doing a good job and was thrilled to hear the most mundane and silly stories from my kids. She was tickled by their antics and would re-tell their stories to her family. I wonder if our society as a whole has gotten so competitive that we can't delight in each other like she did. I hope we can all take a page out of Aunt Sue's book and delight in each other.

As I've become an adult and as people in my life die- probably starting with my grandma- I have come to realize the gaps that they filled in my life. I am well aware that I can't fulfill every need my children have- only God can ultimately- but also grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, Sunday School teachers, cousins, coaches and friends fill gaps. My Aunt Sue loved me really well by being genuinely interested in my life and cheering me on. The last thing she told me was to "take care of those babies". I'll do my best- we (my whole family) are better for being loved by her.

Greta is 2

What's terrible about that? Absolutely nothing. Greta is 2 and we're all here for it. I had a realization the other night when we had friends over that she really is the baby because when a little friend picked up a baby doll, Greta let her know she didn't like that. If it had been any of her siblings, they would have given the doll back because she's the baby. So, I guess you could say we have a little work to do.

Greta is really verbal. She is a parrot and can say just about anything. She also knows what gets laughs- words like "poop" and "toot" get her siblings rolling and a "daddy poopy" especially does. So we try to keep those to a minimum. "No" has also become a staple in her daily vocabulary along with "no take a nap" "no get my shoes" and "no get my jammies". She has no trouble speaking her mind.

If she is awake when the kids go to school, she gets really mad at them when they don't give her hugs and usually cries when daddy leaves. She's like her mama and loves it best when everyone is home.

She likes to cheer for games she sees on tv. She usually says "Go Bluejays" or "Go Buhler". She's a really good traveler as long as she has some snacks and water. :)

She has all her baby teeth in and still sucks her thumb. The other week she got an owie on her thumb, so we had a band aid on it so she started sucking her pointer finger! She loves her bunnies and does really well in nursery when she has one of them with her. She sleeps from 8 until 7 most nights and takes a 2-3 hour afternoon nap.

Greta Jo, we sure do love you! You like to sing Jesus Loves Me and I hope as you grow up, you won't ever lose that simple truth- Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.

Haddie is 8

What an 8 year old! I can't believe my little "Had Joy" as Micah used to call her is 8. She is well into her 2nd grade year and is turning the corner into 3rd quicker than my mind can comprehend. She is such a mama. She loves to take care of Knox and Greta and it is crazy how she can navigate conflict between the littles. When I overhear her, I can hear my own voice in hers. She has always been good with kids, but I think she has taken it to another level. Probably because she's 8 now- practically an adult! Just ask her. :)

Just this last Sunday, she took Greta with her onto the stage to sing the songs at church and she helped her with her actions and got her safely back to the nursery. We do our best not to put those parent responsibilities on to her, and she also just takes care of things.

She and Lana started taking piano lessons this year and as her very biased mother, I think she has a natural gift. She seems to play by ear quite well, hopefully she can learn to read music without losing that ability. I love to hear her sing and hope I can get her to sing with me at church.

Haddie also played basketball this winter and absolutely loved it. And surprising us all, she started becoming a general sports fan. When the boys are watching a game or NFL clips on youtube, she is often found right there with them and asking questions. It's also been sweet to watch them just envelop her with their knowledge.

She still likes playing house and pretend as well as shooting hoops in the driveway or practicing her dribbling. She very practically decided not to play softball this summer "because basketball and soccer are probably enough sports for me". She is playing soccer right now.

We feel like Haddie displays the love of Jesus to her classmates at school and to everyone who knows her. She has a good sense of who she is and walks in that confidence. We love watching her do just that.

Eli is 12

Every year that passes I'm always surprised that we've been at this parenting thing this long. You'd think by year 12 that we would know what we're doing, but here we are depending completely on the grace of God as we do the right things followed promptly by the wrong and asking for forgiveness once again.

Eli gets to hear from us often, "we're sorry, we messed up". And he forgives us. I think that makes him extraordinary.

Eli is well into his first year of middle school and is navigating well. He not only changed buildings, but more than tripled his class size. It's an odd thing we're both navigating as I didn't have to do that when I was in school. By all appearances he is doing well- minding his p's and q's. He has a handful of teachers that he adores. He is looking forward to 7th grade when he can choose his electives and be in school sports. Football seems to be his favorite sport and he can hardly handle thinking about fall without getting giddy. He played basketball this year and showed a lot of improvement. In both basketball and football, he really enjoys the surprise attack of defense. He's pretty relentless and has the stamina to back it up. We enjoyed watching him in both. This summer he plans to play baseball and is looking forward to being with some of his best buddies.

He's at an eager age where he is willing to do about anything to make some money. So, if you have some sticks to pick up or leaves to rake he's your guy. We're anticipating his muscles and eager attitude to help us out with hay this summer. He also has plans to launch a card sorting business, so stay tuned for details on that.

Eli surprised us a little bit and he tried out for the 6th grade singers. He doesn't love the 7:00 am Tuesday practices, but he really has learned a lot and Mrs. C has done a phenomenal job with the kids. I really can't believe how much his singing voice has improved right along with his confidence. He really likes music and especially music no one his age knows about.

And that leads me to what is perhaps his best quality that I will give credit to his dad for. He doesn't really care about what makes him different. In fact, I think he likes it. For the longest time he didn't have a Stanley water bottle, and got one for his birthday, but before that some girls in one of his classes made fun of him (not in an mean way) for his small water bottle. So the next day, he brought his gallon water bottle he takes to practice with him. Also, when the singers had a competition they were allowed to take their phones with them on the bus trip. Not having one, he asked if he we had a rotary phone he could take. We didn't, but he took his dad's broken phone from 2014 and pretended to be on his phone on the bus. It's hilarious and I love that he has embraced what makes him different.

We couldn't be prouder of the boy he is growing into. He is willing to be shaped by God into who He wants him to be. A lot of what he is learning in this season is to be with people who are different without making them into an enemy. I think that demonstrates the beauty of Jesus in a very tangible way.

Greta- 18 months

Greta turned 18 months and now I am reminded why I do an 18 month update. There's just so much that happens between 1 and 1.5. Greta started walking around 16 months. She went from taking zero steps to taking 10. I wonder if that trend will hold true for her- once she's ready, she will do it!

She has just a handful of words- bunny (her most prized possession) is "bu" and ball sounds very similar to this. She does say mom and dad- she can distinguish between her siblings and says names for them, but they basically sound all the same. Much to Haddie's delight, hers has been the most distinguishable. Probably her cutest word is "shoes". She really enjoys picking her shoes in the morning now. Oh and how could I forget, we all very much understand her "no"- she almost makes it into a two syllable and I don't know how to phonetically type it out so we'll just have to consult our videos once we read this and don't remember. :)

She still sucks her left thumb when she's sleeping or if she has her bunny. She is doing pretty well in nursery at church, she usually cries at the initial drop off but then finds her people and bunny. She dances when she hears music and sometimes claps. At Sams Club the other day I noticed she was especially keen on smiling and waving to people who weren't paying her any attention and then those that looked at her and tried to talk to her, she gave them her scowl.

Her siblings still think shes the best thing ever. Knox is learning how to play with Greta especially now that the big kids are all at school. It is the sweetest. Since they both have their lovies they're pretty attached to, Greta will go get Knox's fox and hand it to him. It's really precious. They have some moments of fighting too, but mostly love.

Micah is 9

Micah turned 9 in the middle of April and then the "end-of-school" started. :) I told myself I had to get his update done before June otherwise my brain would turn into mush.

When we think of Micah we think about what a great friend he is. He has a variety of kids in his class that he talks about and he knows real details about them. Whenever my kids get invited to a birthday party, I ask what kind of gift their friend would like and he can always come up with something. I heard one of his friends describe him as the "class clown" so I'm trusting his teacher would have told me if that was a problem. He loves to laugh and make others laugh too. That's true at home too. Micah and Eli have really gotten into sports cards. They both still love the Dallas Cowboys. It's wild to me how much they have picked up from reading cards. He adores Emmit Smith and when the boys play football he loves playing running back. He's so shifty fast- I think he often surpises people with his speed. They know what era certain players are from based on the card design and know rookie years to players from looking them up. I will admit, the hobby sometimes makes me crazy when I walk in their room, but overall it's been a good bonding experience for the boys and not a bad way to get some sneaky reading in. :)

Micah received the core essentials award at the end of the school year this year. He and his buddy Marshall and I genuinely think he was just as happy for Marshall as he was himself. He's just the best cheerleader. Oh, and he's become a good photographer for us at Eli's baseball so that has been really handy for this mom. He is anxiously awaiting the start of his season- kid pitch!

This past year meant a diagnosis for Micah too. He has alopecia areata. If you've seen him in person, I'm certain you've noticed. It's an autoimmune disease and his dermatologist has given us hope that his hair growth will return, but of course it isn't guaranteed. For now, it seems his hair loss has stalled out, so we're just treating the spots and will see his doctor next month. He has done awesome with it- kids ask of course, but he tells them the name and they move on. I think it's evidence of what a good friend he is to others, because they haven't picked on him about it at all.

Of all of our kids, Micah is the most emotive about missing his Grandpa Wichert. He often will tell us stories he remembers in the most random of moments. I'm so glad God made him this way. Micah is such a gift to our whole family. Our prayer continues to be as Micah grows in stature that he will grow in favor with God and men. We are confident that God who began His good work will see it to completion- that Micah will grow to hear the voice of God and respond in obedience. Oh God, let it be.
